Week 2 DFS Cheat Sheet: FanDuel and DraftKings (UPDATED) September 18, 2016  |  Ian Goldsmith

Welcome to Week 2 of the 2016 The Fake Football FanDuel and DraftKings DFS Cheat Sheet!

With the help of our resident DFS Gurus Ian Goldsmith and Jason Bales, we have put together a comprehensive NFL DFS Cheat Sheet with matchup stats, analysis, picks, sample lineups and lineup configuration advice. We have picks for FanDuel and Draftkings, and with their differing settings, the picks, stats and analysis will help you on even more sites than just those two. And with a week between games we will update our picks and analysis as the week progresses. You will receive your Cheat Sheet on Wednesday, in time for the Thursday night games and then we will update the sheet on Sunday Mornings to make sure you don’t miss any breaking news.

And even though we will have more info, more stats, more picks and just more everything in our NFL sheets, we will not be raising the price. Each sheet will remain $1.99 each just like our baseball and basketball sheets. And as a subscriber you will receive an email as soon as the new Cheat Sheet is posted on Wednesday of each week and then an update on Sunday mornings.

PLUS! Ian Goldsmith’s DFS Optimizer will be added to the sheets this season! It will go LIVE every Friday!

Injury Report:

Sunday Update:

Gronkowski is OUT

Demaryius Thomas will test his hip before the game, but is expected to play. He is not a safe play.

Josh Norman won’t cover Dez Bryant, Breeland will. This is a bump for Bryant, but we still don’t know how often Prescott will look his way deep.

Russell Wilson is active, but could be limited as a runner.

Rob Gronkowski is questionable against the Dolphins this week and ESPN Patriots reporter Mike Reiss said “it wouldn’t be a surprise” if Gronkowski sat out again this week. Thankfully we will know his status before lineups lock. If he can’t go then give Julian Edelman a nice boost for DFS.

Chris Ivory will not play this week due to his “special” injury and T.J. Yeldon will once again get the start and see plenty of work. The going should be much easier for him against the Chargers weak defense and he makes for a nice play in both daily and redraft.

Russell Wilson practiced all week and will start against the Rams. He’s not on the injury report, but ESPN Seahawks reporter Sheil Kapadia believes Russell Wilson will see fewer designed runs and stay in the pocket more due to his ankle problem. This could very well be the case because the Seahawks should be able to beat the Rams without needing Wilson’s rushing ability. This could help Doug Baldwin, who would be in line for more quick targets out of the slot.

Demaryius Thomas didn’t look healthy this week in limited practices and his availability for Sunday’s game is up in the air. Look to Emmanuel Sanders and Virgil Green to lead the team in targets this week and stay far away from Thomas.

Zach Ertz is out for the Eagles Monday night game against the Bears. His absence will draw more attention to Jordan Matthews, but he should see enough extra targets to be useful in DFS against a poor secondary. Trey Burton will take over for Ertz and has a little upside in TE2 leagues, but is too scary for DFS.

The Saints best cornerback Delvin Breaux will miss six weeks with a broken fibula, which is awful news for an already bad Saints secondary. Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard make for great DFS plays and even Victor Cruz and Will Tye have some upside this week.

Saints tight end Josh Hill won’t play against the Giants due to a high-ankle sprain. Hill didn’t have any targets last week, but did see snaps. Coby Fleener is assured plenty of routes this week in a great matchup. He’s risky after a poor Week 1, but the upside is there in what should be a shootout.

Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu both returned to a full practice on Friday and aren’t listed on the injury report. They get a nice matchup and both should be used in redraft. This could be the time to get Jones at lower ownership in a great matchup if people stay away from him due to his ankle.

Jonathan Stewart was limited all week in practice, but coach Ron Rivera expects him to play. In a game where the Panthers could build a big lead, Stewart could see a large amount of carries as they ice the game. His touchdown upside is still lower than other backs.

Eagles cornerback Leodis McKelvin won’t play against the Bears, which should help Alshon Jeffery find better matchups and plenty of targets.

Packers’ cornerback Sam Shields won’t be able to play against the Vikings. This should help Stefon Diggs, but we also just don’t know how Sam Bradford will do in his new offense. I could see using him in a GPP.

Patrick Peterson should shadow Mike Evans in Arizona. That puts a damper on his upside, but should open things up for Vincent Jackson who will see rookie back Brandon Williams, who was beaten easily by Chris Hogan on a touchdown last week and just didn’t have a good game overall. Jackson has some GPP appeal.

With Keenan Allen done for the year, Travis Benjamin appears set to take on Allen’s role. After the injury Benjamin saw seven targets to four for Tyrell Williams, three for Danny Woodhead and Dontrelle Inman and one for Antonio Gates. The Chargers say they are going to get the ball to Gates more, but I am looking hard at Benjamin due to volume this week and Williams due to touchdown upside.

The Jaguars right cornerback Prince Amukamara is also out with a hamstring injury, which should help the Chargers’ receivers in this one.

Lineup Configurations

Thursday Cash/GPP

This lineup should be viable for all formats. There is enough upside with the Titans stack to provide value in tournaments, while their opponent for the week should ensure that they also have a high floor. I absolutely love Mariota this week, and am looking for him to have one of the top couple of weeks of his young career. I also love Tajae Sharpe, who has turned into Mariota’s go-to, as seen with his 11 targets in week 1. Delanie Walker should have his first big week here against a Lions team that got decimated by Colts TEs last week. The three of them should offer a very solid floor, with excellent upside.

I actually paid up for RB this week. You’ll see both C.J. Anderson and David Johnson. Both have fantastic matchups, especially Anderson. At $9,000, Johnson is a bit expensive, so even though I think this lineup will work in both cash and GPP lineups, it is a little more useful in a tournament. At the other WR spots, you have Eric Decker, who continued his TD rampage last week, and Sterling Shepard, who has a matchup that fantasy dreams are made of. While the Saints try and limit the damage from Odell Beckham, Shepard (and, to some extent, Victor Cruz) will have a lot of space on the field against a Saints secondary with little experience. I’m playing it safe at D with my top DST pick of the week, the Panthers. As always, I am only paying the minimum salary for kicker…Nick Folk should once again hit value.

Sunday Cash

I’m paying up for Drew Brees in this lineup. In this matchup, it would be shocking to see him go for less than 300 yards and a couple of scores. He threw seven against the Giants last year. He will not throw that many this year (well, I highly doubt it), but his ownership will be sky-high, which means he is a very safe bet in cash games. Shepard makes an appearance again. Odell Beckham joins him here. He, too, should have incredibly high ownership this week. Again, I’m paying up for RB, but have switched out David Johnson for Spencer Ware. It is VERY likely that Charles sits out again, which means it’s all Ware. While I prefer him on full PPR sites, he should do enough damage where he is viable on 0.5 PPR sites like FanDuel and Yahoo. I think people will be a little hesitant to use him given the matchup, but this matchup screams screen passes to RBs to me. I think Ware and Kelce will have great games. Ebron, who had a solid Week 1 after an injury scare in preseason, should be heavily involved again this week. His upside is not as high as Walker or Kelce, but I like him nonetheless for cash lineups. Once again, I’m playing it safe at DST with Seattle. At kicker, I’ve gone with Jacksonville’s Jason Myers, who should see plenty of opportunities this week.

Sunday Cash 2

There are a few familiar faces here, so I’ll skip those in this write-up. At TE, you might be surprised to see Jesse James as a cash play. However, this week there are a few high end options (CJ Anderson, Odell Beckham) that are near musts in cash games, so James offers a combination of a rock-bottom price and a good matchup. In two games against the Bengals (regular season), Steelers TE Heath Miller saw 23 targets. He caught 20 of those. I’m not sure if James will see 11-12 targets, but I can easily see 6-8 as a floor as Cincy focuses on stopping Antonio Brown. Two of the other big differences here are Danny Woodhead and Brandin Cooks. With Keenan Allen out, Woodhead should see a very solid floor as he will be one of Philip Rivers’ favorite targets, as he was last year when Allen went down. Cooks, who had a massive week against the Raiders in Week 1, should also be a huge part of the game plan in New York this week in the fantasy-laden game that is the Giants-Saints. Last year in when the two teams met, Cooks finished with a very solid 6/88/2 line. He could very well get close to matching those numbers, and should have a very high floor this week.

Sunday GPP

With Robert Griffin out, it is once again Josh McCown who will take over the QB duties for the Browns. Though he only played 8 games last year, he was fairly electric when he was on the field, and had a few massive games. His biggest? Against this Ravens team in Week 5, he threw for over 450 yards, passed for 2 TDs and added another on the ground. Though the Ravens’ D is improved this year, at only $6,000, I’m definitely considering stacking him with Gary Barnidge, who was the #1 TE last year when McCown was at the helm. I think fewer people will have Spencer Ware this week given the matchup, but he has a ton of upside, especially in the passing game. On the other side of the field, you have DeAndre Hopkins, who destroyed the Chiefs last season. With a limited pass rush due to the lack of Justin Houston and a rookie in Fuller that they can’t forget about, the Chiefs will have their hands full.

DraftKings Lineup Configurations

In order to fully take advantage of the Thursday game, roster Eric Decker. He has high upside tonight against the Buffalo Bills, as he gets most of the New York Jets’ red zone targets. He is not a huge part of the offense, but he tends score a touchdown once a week, which is great for fantasy purposes. On top of Decker, Dak Prescott is still too cheap. He gets a solid matchup against the Washington Redskins, and with Josh Norman locked down on Dez Bryant, roster Jason Witten in hopes that he continues to see a lot of targets. Prescott needs a check down, so he likely will. The New England Patriots really showcased Blount’s ability to run, especially in the red zone, so he has high upside against the Miami Dolphins, and C.J. Anderson could finally breakout after over a year of breaking fantasy owners’ hearts. Round out the rest of the team with a few great WRs – Larry Fitzgerald, Brandin Cooks, and Marvin Jones Jr. All three of these wideouts had a great week one. As far as a defense goes, the Jacksonville Jaguars have a lot of upside. The San Diego Chargers looked great week one, but it their offense is not that great, especially with Keenan Allen out for the season.

This is going to sound odd at first, but stick with me – use Joe Flacco and Steve Smith in cash games this week. The Philadelphia Eagles and rookie quarterback Carson Wentz picked apart the Cleveland Browns’ defense, and the Ravens likely will too. Smith is going to continue to be targeted heavily, making him a great option in cash games. David Johnson looked solid against the New England Patriots, a team that is generally fantastic against the rushing attack, and it looks like Theo Riddick is going to be a much bigger part of the Detroit Lions offense than most people first thought. If he is, his price tag is too low. The rest of this lineup is wide receivers. Larry Fitzgerald had a huge week against the Patriots, and he is going to be a big part of the Cardinals’ offense. Willie Snead is set to have a career season. C.J. Anderson looks like he is going to have a great season, as evidenced by his game last week, and the Broncos will rely heavily on him again this week. As far as the tight end position goes, Delanie Walker is one of the better options in the league.

In tournaments, Carson Wentz makes a lot of sense. He gets a great matchup against the Chicago Bears, a team that is just not good defensively, and in his first game, which happened to be against the Cleveland Browns, he definitely looked NFL ready. It is to be expected that the rookie quarterback has a couple of slip ups, but I have yet to see one. He is throwing well under pressure, and that is great to see early in the season. Stacking him with Jordan Matthews is a great move in tournaments. Danny Woodhead looked great, even though Melvin Gordon scored two rushing touchdowns. Woodhead out-rushed him on the ground, and he caught a touchdown, as well. Theo Riddick, again, is too cheap if he continues to play a big role in the Detroit Lions’ offense. Willie Snead is set to breakout this season, especially if Drew Bree’s continues to play the way he is playing. Doug Baldwin is a huge target for the Seahawks, and it looks like he will continue to be a touchdown machine. As far as tight ends go, Gary Barnidge disappointed a lot of people, but with Robert Griffin III already injured, he should see a lot more targets. Do not use him in 50/50 contests. Finally, The Carolina Panthers defense round out this high-upside lineup.

Hey folks, Ian here. There are a ton of websites out there that offer their own version of DFS optimizers. Most of them are really well done. Of course, most of them cost an arm and a leg too. The thing is, for all the good an optimizer does, at the end of the day it still only gives you a starting point on which to base your lineup. You need to still come up with projections. I’m not a programmer, but I use Excel extensively in my day job as an economist. So, I thought I’d try and figure out a way to create a basic optimizer and share it with you all. It’s not fancy. This doesn’t have some kind of eye-candy GUI. However, it works. And, at the end of the day, that’s what matters.

As for projections, I’m a big believer in the wisdom of crowds. This basic optimizer uses a mixture of projections from a number of different sites. If you want to do this yourself in the future and don’t want to do any kind of tedious regression analysis, I’d recommend using the FantasyPros Consensus Projections as a starting point. After getting averages of what many different experts think will happen on Sunday, you can then make tweaks of your own. To make this, I watched a lot of Youtube videos and used much of my previous Excel knowledge, much I learned through my local library (Libraries are awesome!). That is to say, this is relatively easy to make on your own given a little patience.

To use this optimizer, you’ll need Excel 2010 or later. If you have that, then click on one of the two links below (or both!), depending on which site you are playing. There are instructions on the first sheet. If you have any questions whatsoever about how to use the optimizer, or if it’s not working for you, e-mail me at dailyfantasyguy@gmail.com. I’ll do my best to get back to you right away. If you don’t have Excel 2010 or later, then shoot me an e-mail with constraints you want, and I’ll run it for you. Also, if you have any ideas for things you’d want to see included in future iterations of this, then I’d also love to hear about them! Thanks, and have fun!!

FanDuel Sunday-Monday

QUICK NOTE: Remember, these lineups are just a first run through the optimizer with adjusted consensus stats from several places online. You can always remove players you don’t want to include. For instance, I’m not keen on using the San Diego defense, so I would remove them using the filters on the optimizer and then run it again. If you have any questions at all, shoot me an e-mail at dailyfantasyguy@gmail.com. Good luck this week!

A very simple, but good start to DFS research is to look at the over/unders and odds. Obviously you want your players in games where Vegas believes the game will be high scoring and on winning teams, while your defenses should come from games they believe will be low scoring.
