Sunday Updates:

Josh Freeman will start for the Colts. The Titans D is in play as a cheap option.

Danny Amendola will be available, but it’s hard to know how much they’ll need or use him.

Zach Miller is INACTIVE.

Bilal Powell is INACTIVE, boost Ivory.

Playoff Scenarios:

The Carolina Panthers need to win to get the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. They play Tampa Bay and could get out to a big lead and rest earlier than normal, but they’d have still put up a bunch of fantasy points.

The Arizona Cardinals need to beat Seattle and have the Panthers lose to Tama Bay to get the No. 1 seed. That does seem unlikely, but Bruce Arians says the Cardinals will play their starters, and at least, there is still that chance Arizona could get home-field advantage.

The Green Bay Packers will take on the Minnesota Vikings for the NFC North title. Both teams have clinched a spot in the playoffs, but a win gives Green Bay the division and more time playing at home. Both teams should go all out, but if I were the Vikings, I’m not sure how badly I’d want to play Seattle, which they would if they won.

The Pittsburgh Steelers need to win and the New York Jets need to lose for the Steelers to make the playoffs, while the Jets just need to beat the Buffalo Bills to make it in. Both games are at noon, so there will be no way for either team to know their fate ahead of time.
The Seattle Seahawks have clinched a playoff spot, but could get the No. 5 seed if they beat the Arizona Cardinals. It’s not a huge leap though. If the Seahawks get the No. 5 seed, they’ll either play at Minnesota or Washington, but if they lose and get the No. 6 seed, they could go to Lambeau, which is always a tough place to play. Seattle isn’t in a must-win situation, but the Seahawks should play their starters coming off a home loss to the Case Keenum-led Rams.

The Washington D.C. team has nothing to play for, other than the pride of not winning the division with a losing record. Will that be enough to push coach Gruden to play his starters? Coach Gruden says no, since he plans on resting his starters at some point. I would not use Washington’s starters this week, but I will be all in on Darren McFadden, who has been running well lately.

The New England Patriots need to beat the Miami Dolphins to secure the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage. If the Patriots were to lose and the Denver Broncos beat the San Diego Chargers, Denver would end up with the top spot.

The Denver Broncos need to win to keep atop their division and even have a shot at the top seed and home-field advantage throughout. If the Broncos were to lose, they could drop to a fifth or sixth playoff spot and play all their games away from Mile High.

The Cincinnati Bengals still have a shot at a first-round bye if they beat the Ravens and the Broncos lose to the Chargers. Cincinnati could also lose and still get the No. 2 seed, if the Oakland Raiders beat the Chiefs and the Broncos lost.

Kansas City could still win the AFC West with a win over the Raiders and a Denver loss to San Diego.

After Denver won on Monday night, there is still a slim chance the Indianapolis Colts could sneak into the playoffs over the Houston Texans, who will now need to win, to keep those sneaky Colts from sneaking.

These scenarios are all pretty darn good for Week 17 fantasy football. Washington is really the only team with absolutely nothing to play for, while the teams out of contention don’t need to worry about saving their players for the playoffs.

Injury Report:

Todd Gurley is out and Tre Mason will get the start against the 49ers in San Francisco. The 49ers play tougher at home, but Mason should easily see 15 or more touches and the 49ers on average have been weak against running backs.

Bilal Powell hasn’t practiced all week and even though he’s listed as questionable, all signs point to him not being able to play. That sets up well for Chris Ivory, who should be the no-doubt workhorse against the Bills in a must-win game. The Bills run defense ranks 31st in Football Outsiders’ metrics and Ivory already totaled 135 yards against them in Week 10.

Matt Hasselbeck, Charlie Whitehurst and Andrew Luck are all done for, so it will be either Ryan Lindley or Josh Freeman at the helm for the Colts. They will most likely go conservative and feature Frank Gore, who needs 109 yards rushing to reach the arbitrary 1,000 yards rushing mark.

The Panthers will be without Ted Ginn Jr. and Jonathan Stewart this week. They have an easy matchup against Tampa Bay, but they still MUST win so they can stay ahead of Arizona in the playoff seeding. I would expect to see plenty of Greg Olsen in this game and he makes for a nice DFS play, while I’m not worrying too much about Cam. He’ll use his legs to help his cause and Ginn’s loss isn’t huge. Devin Funchess gets a boost and will be worthwhile in DFS tourneys.

The Bears will be without Alshon Jeffery and Eddie Royal for their finale against the Lions. That gives Zach Miller, who didn’t get much practice in and is listed as questionable, the pathway to the most targets and usage. I like him a lot in DFS as long as he’s a go.

T.J. Yeldon remains out and Denard Robinson and Jonas Gray will both get work, as Robinson has been underwhelming and coach Gus Bradley mentioned wanting to see more from Gray for evaluation. That makes neither all that appealing, but I could see Gray getting the hot hand in this one.

Matt Forte is also listed as questionable, but did get limited practices in this week. This will be Forte’s final game with the Bears and also his final home game in Chicago, so I expect him to play and with the receivers all decimated, I expect a lot of work for him in the passing game. He’s risky with Jeremy Langford there and his injury, but I’ll be throwing him in some GPPs.

Julian Edelman is out and Danny Amendola is listed as questionable, but Amendola says he expects to play. That’s annoying, because if Amendola is active, it makes it tougher to play Keshawn Martin in DFS, but still impossible to play Amendola, who could be limited. When it comes down to it, Rob Gronkowski is the only safe play here.

Brian Hoyer returns from his second brain injury of the season, to start for the Texans, who get a great passing matchup against the Jaguars. Cecil Shorts will be out, which helps Nate Washington and Jaelen Strong.

Michael Floyd got a limited practice in on Friday and is listed as questionable. All signs point to him playing, but it is in a late game, so be ready to pivot from him if you need to.

Johnny Manziel is out and Austin Davis will start. Travis Benjamin is questionable, but should be able to go after getting limited practices in Thursday and Friday. Davis is a slouch, but he should throw the ball plenty and the Steelers pass defense is garbage. I could see Gary Barnidge and/or Benjamin having a decent game.

Martavis Bryant has an illness and is listed as questionable. It’s worth keeping an eye on, but if he’s starting, you start him, even in DFS.

Karlos Williams and Mike Gillislee will again split work with LeSean McCoy out. Against a tough Jets’ run defense, I’ll be staying away from both where I can, but Williams is the lead back in this committee and would be my choice between the two.

The Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan is out for this game, which makes the Colts an even more intriguing D/ST option. Zach Mettenberger will get the start once again and he has been absolutely awful, unless you are using him to up your D/ST points each week.

Rishard Matthews isn’t expected to play, so DeVante Parker should continue to be the No. 2 receiver on the team. The Dolphins have given up, but chucking the ball up for Parker as they trail the Patriots sounds like something they could try.

Tyler Eifert will return from his brain injury to go smash he head into some stuff and hopefully score another touchdown for your fantasy team. I don’t love his upside, but he’s a touchdown machine.

Marques Colston is out again. Brandon Coleman will take his snaps and could have some value in what should be a high scoring affair.

GPP 1: With Hoyer back, I like his upside against a Jags defense that Football Outsiders ranks 31st against the pass this season. With Todd Gurley out, Tre Mason should see plenty of work in a game the Rams should be able to keep close. Freeman is set up for a good game on the ground and through the air against the Saints worst defense in the league. Hopkins is going for some Houston receiving records and they still need to win to secure their playoff spot. Maclin has been extremely safe of late and has a bit more upside against the Raiders, who he torched for 2 TDs earlier in the season. Julio Jones will be in all of my lineups this week. He’ll get his, but if he gets off to a hot start and has a chance to break records, I could see them force feeding the ball to him late. Ertz has been the main target for the Eagles of late and gets the Giants poor TE defense. Washington will probably play their starters just a half, allowing Bailey more opportunities. Whoever QBs for the Colts will have been sleeping on the curb recently.

Cash: I think Cam is the safest QB going. I like Big Ben a lot, but we saw what happened last week and it is a little disconcerting. I’ll have Ben in cash games, but Cam is my main guy. Run DMC should be the main mode of offense for the Cowboys and Washington will rest their starters at some point, while already being weak against the run. Mason’s price is just too low as the starter in a game against a poor run defense in which the Rams are favored. OBJ and Julio Jones are chalk plays to be sure, but incredibly high upside chalk plays. KeShawn Martin saw 11 targets last week with Amendola and Edelman out. I expect both to be out again.

DraftKings Lineup Configurations

Forget what Big Ben did last week. He needs a win this week and the matchup is excellent. The Browns are not going to put up the same fight that the Ravens did. He’s about as safe a QB play as there is (Tom Brady and Cam Newton are in play here too). For RB I’m looking at guys with a really floor that won’t cost me an arm and a leg. White and Powell catch so many passes and are becoming integral parts of their offenses. Both teams need a win this week so they are going to pull out all the punches. Jennings has put up three straight solid performances for the Giants and he was the most consistent player left at his price point to throw into my FLEX. Julio and Marshall are super safe regardless of matchup. Both have excellent matchups and are worth their high price tags. JMatt has been putting up garbage time stats every week and Bradford loves him. The Giants pass D is weak and this could be a shootout. For his price he’s a very solid play. The same goes for Kelce. Oakland isn’t going to isn’t really playing for much and they struggle against the TE. Alex Smith rediscovered Kelce last week and a repeat performance would make for a great cash game score. As always I don’t want to mess up my cash games with a weak defensive performance so I’ll just roll out the best one in the league and take what they give me.

The Eagles’ pass D is garbage and Eli is not going out with two bad weeks in a row (especially in what could be Coughlin’s last game as Giants HC). He and OBJ make a lethal combo in a meaningless game. Gurley and Freeman both have excellent matchups against bottom 3 run defenses. James White has such a high floor due to his pass catching skills. NE needs to win this game so they are going to go all out to pulverize the Dolphins. People are going to be down on Martavis and Green-Beckham based on their combined 1 catch last week. Take advantage as both have stellar matchups and should excel for a cheap price. Vance McDonald feels like chasing some points from last week but STL can’t defend the TE so there is upside with him. The Bengals need to win and Baltimore played their Super Bowl last week against Pitt. They are going to get killed this week.

The GPP #1 sample lineup is kind of safe while this one is all about going a little off the grid. Weeden looked good last week against a poor Titans D and this week’s matchup against Jacksonville is just as good. Pair him with DeAndre Hopkins and you could get top line performance at a low ownership and price. DWill has been one of the most consistent RB in fantasy all year and is worth his high price tag in a must win game for the Steelers. As an added bonus he’s catching a bunch of passes this year. With the firing of Chip Kelly I’d expect the Eagles to try to get something out of Murray this year and it wouldn’t shock me if he got 20 carries against the Giants. Just know that this could totally blow up in your face. Hightower faces the Falcons and they are very poor against the run. Julio gets to face New Orleans and all WR score big against them. He’s worth whatever it costs to roster him. Randle makes for a nice play if you think NYG rolls. He’s scored in 4 of his last 5 games. Delanie Walker is about as solid a TE play as you can get that’s not named Gronk or Jordan Reed. The 49ers D isn’t great but the Rams offense isn’t any prized pig either.

FantasyAces Lineup Configurations

Sunday 50/50

There is a lot of safety to be had this week, starting with Ryan Fitzpatrick, who has been the most consistent QB (and in my opinion, player) of the fantasy season. He may not wow you with 40 FP weeks, but he is almost a sure thing to get you 3X value. He has been incredible all season and will be looking to go full throttle in a must win game against the Bills. I’ve paired him here with Eric Decker who has been, perhaps, the most consistent WR play all season in DFS. He shows up each week, scores points, and goes home. What else do you need? The other QB here is Bradford. While he has been inconsistent this season, I love the matchup against a Giants team giving up 298 passing yards per game. They are  terrible and the Eagles’ passing game (Bradford to Matthews and Ertz especially) has looked great the past couple of weeks. There will be no Chip Kelly, so there is an element of mystery here, but I’m not worried about those two.

DeAngelo Williams and Tim Hightower have both been playing very well and have excellent matchups against the Browns and Falcons, respectively. Expect both to be used heavily, especially DW whose Steelers are in a must win game. Hightower’s price is still relatively cheap, so don’t be afraid to use him. Julio is the safest of the big three WRs this week (although the matchups for the other two are golden). He is targeted heavily and New Orleans is one of the worst defenses I’ve ever seen against WRs. They are pathetic…not that I could do better. Zach Miller is one of the only men left standing in the Chicago receiving game. He’ll be used heavily again this week. Nate Washington has had big games without Cecil Shorts on the field, which will be the case this week. The Colts are cheap, have been playing well, and have an excellent matchup. They are one of my favorite plays in cash and tournaments this week.

Sunday GPP #1

Brian Hoyer is a bit of a risky play, coming back from concussion protocol. The upside is too great to ignore this week in a must win game against the Jags (they technically don’t have to win, but it would ensure a playoff appearance instead of leaving it to fate). Rashad Jennings has been on fire the past three weeks and gets an excellent matchup against an Eagles team that has basically laid down and let opposing RBs trod all over them. He’s cheap and has excellent upside. Devonta Freeman has an incredible matchup, but is questionable to play on Sunday. If he is out for some reason, then Terron Ward could be a very sneaky DFS play as Coleman has already been ruled out. Keep your eyes and ears alert. Zach Ertz has been incredible the past three weeks and gets a meeting with a Giants team that is 2nd worst against the position. Demaryius Thomas has been more of a cash play, but I like his upside this week with Eric Weddle out for the Chargers. Denver is in a must win situation, so expect Brock to look his way often.

Sunday GPP #2

This is a bit of a different look, although you’ll see some familiar names, especially from the Giants/Eagles game. I’m rolling with Eli here as his upside his huge with OBJ back in action, who, not coincidentally, I’ve paired with him here. They have 70+ FP upside combined if this turns into the shootout Vegas expects (though 50 FP is a more reasonable outlook). I’ve doubled down with Rueben Randle as well. Matt Ryan has made me want to tear my hair out at times, but I’m all aboard this week as he faces off against the woeful Saints’ D. On the other side of the field, Brandin Cooks has been on fire and should be looked to often, though the matchup is not the best. But, hey, this is a GPP lineup afterall. DeMarco Murray is a total mystery at this point, but I expect the interim coaches to try and utilize him often this week. We’ll see….he’s a wildcard until we hear more info and not to be advised unless you’re using him in a deep tournament while entering multiple lineups.

A very simple, but good start to DFS research is to look at the over/unders and odds. Obviously you want your players in games where Vegas believes the game will be high scoring and on winning teams, while your defenses should come from games they believe will be low scoring.
