Sunday Morning Update:

It appears DeMarco Murray has lost his starting job, but there is no good clarity. Much depends on where Ryan Mathews is this week. If he’s not ready for the bulk of the work Darren Sproles would again see a lot of work. Sproles makes for an interesting GPP play in 1 point PPR DFS sites.

Philip Rivers has the flu and the weather in KC looks horrible. Get your KC defense going.

Jimmy Clausen will get the start. The Seahawks of course make for a great D/ST play this week.

C.J. Anderson is looking like he won’t go, but if he were to suit up, Hillman/Thompson would still be the top backs today. Hillman looks like a decent play, but I do worry about re-injury. I won’t be using him in cash games.

Injury News:

Rob Gronkowski is a game time decision for Sunday night, which of course makes it tough for us fantasy players. His usage, if he plays, could easily be limited to the red zone, but you know how Gronk does around the “Gronk Spike Place” as he calls it. This hurts Scott Chandler, but I could easily see him do well with a limited Gronk and no Julian Edelman, who has been ruled out despite returning to practice.

Brandin Cooks apparently didn’t have a brain injury, but he felt like he did. Hopefully he feels better now, but at least we know he is going to suit up and has a nice matchup against Tampa’s weak secondary. Add in the loss of Mark Ingram for the season and we should see plenty of targets to Cooks and Willie Snead who is back this week.

Tim Hightower and C.J. Spiller will split work with Ingram out, but it is really tough to feel great about either, especially against a decent Bucs rush defense with Gerald McCoy possibly returning this week.

Ronnie Hillman was able to practice Friday and is set to start against the Raiders. C.J. Anderson didn’t practice and is unlikely to contribute much, even if he were to suit up. If Hillman were to reinjure his foot, Juwan Thompson would lead the way.

Allen Hurns returns from his thigh injury this week to a nice matchup against the Colts. His return hurts Allen Robinson slightly. I don’t think we can count on three touchdowns this week from ARob, but We’ll be fine with one or two. .

Ryan Mathews was able to practice this week and put in a full practice both Thursday and Friday. DeMarco Murray was benched for the most part last week and then went over Chip Kelly’s head to complain. So he either gets some squeaky wheel action or continues to sit. Darren Sproles led the way with Murray on the bench last week, but add in Mathews, who has played better than Murray all season, and you have a tough fantasy situation. I’ll be fading Murray across the board this week. His ability has diminished as well as his playing time. Mathews has the highest ceiling this week and I could see giving him a shot if you really need a big game.

Karlos Williams is out again this week, which helps LeSean McCoy’s already high upside. I’m going all in on the revenge game narrative this week as well, because he already has tremendous upside, so you don’t have to rely on the revenge factor, so instead, you can slather it on the top of his upside cake.

Darrelle Revis will return, boosting the Jets pass’ defense against Marcus Mariota. He’ll probably shadow Dorial Green-Beckham with Kendall Wright out this week. This isn’t the greatest matchup for tight ends, but there’s a good chance Delanie Walker sees plenty of targets.

Tyler Eifert is back from his neck stinger and just in time for a nice matchup in a game that should be high scoring. His presence hurts Marvin Jones and maybe A.J. Green slightly, but if this game lives up to its over/under of 50 points, then everyone should get a piece of the pie.

Pacman Jones won’t play, while Leon Hall and George Iloka are both questionable, which puts the Bengals’ secondary behind the eight-ball against one of the top offenses in the league. Fire up Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant and even Heath Miller, who got a full practice in on Friday.

Jimmy Clausen looks likely to start over Matt Schaub, who is dealing with a brain injury. Either way you have to feel great about Seattle’s defense this week. Buck Allen has some value in PPR leagues, as he should see plenty of targets. Crockett Gillmore won’t be able to play and Maxx Williams will, but neither is worth a start.

Vance McDonald is out with a brain injury, which moves Blake Bell into the starting role. He has some appeal in dynasty, but I’d be hard pressed to find a spot for him this week on my teams.

Marquess Wilson has been sent to I.R., but it appears Eddie Royal will be able to come back this week. Hopefully if you made the fantasy playoffs you don’t need Royal’s iffy contributions this week.

Chris Thompson is out, but Alfred Morris and Matt Jones still remain scary plays this week.

The Rams will be without Robert Quinn and Janoris Jenkins, which makes this matchup for Matthew Stafford and friends a positive rather than negative.

Calvin Johnson is listed as questionable and didn’t practice on Friday, but practiced earlier and all signs point to him playing.

Philip Rivers has the flu and will be without Stevie Johnson and Dontrelle Inman, but thankfully he should get offensive linemen King Dunlap and D.J. Fluker back. I’d stay away from this whole situation other than starting Kansas City’s defense.

Falcons’ run-stopping defensive lineman Paul Soliai won’t play this week, giving Jonathan Stewart a bump.

Thursday GPP

Thursday GPP: Right now the Cards have the highest projected Vegas points and I always like to have a GPP stack using the that as a basis. So Palmer, Johnson and Brown are my favorite plays and they are actually at a fair price, which allows me to get Doug Martin in a premium matchup and Allen Robinson, who has become a must cash game play each week.  ASJ is a little scary and his price isn’t great, but I like him in GPPs with the best matchup of the week. Prater is cheap and has been kicking well. He’ll be in a dome once again. The Seahawks face Schaub or Clausen. UPDATE: Brandin Cooks is dealing with a concussion, so I removed him from this lineup and replaced him with Hilton.

Sunday Cash Lineup

Sunday Cash Lineup

Cash: I usually would couple Roethlisberger with one of his receivers, but their prices were a bit high for me to fir and I preferred Sammy Watkins over Martavis Bryant in a cash game. The reliability of these two running backs in great matchups are the core of this tea,. Martin and McCoy are my top two RBs this week and I don’t love the cheaper options. Brandin Cooks gave us a scare, but he’s back in play and I love his upside with Ingram done for the season. Boldin is my cheap play, but has been getting heavily targeted and gets a great matchup this week. I’ve been having trouble finding a tight end I love. Greg Olsen is the best cash game play, but Eifert fit this team better at $300 ledd and I like this Steelers/Bangals game to put up good points and Eifert is a TD machine. Preter in the dome at punt price is my #1 kicker option and I’ll have him all over my teams. There are quite a few good defense options, but KC at a slight discount from Carolina, Denver and Seattle, makes for a great play against Rivers, who has lost all his receivers and offensive line.

Sunday GPP Lineup

Sunday GPP Lineup

Cam will most likely be highly used, but his upside remains higher than all QBs, which is what I want in a GPP. Yeldon gets a great matchup and last week was finally utilized near the goal line. I think he has sneaky upside. McCoy has the highest ceiling of all RBs. Hurns has a good matchup and price. I feel good about a bounceback game. Lockett is the scariest of these, but should see enough work as the No. 2 target on a hot Seahawks team. The Panthers should rattle Matt Ryan and get him passing a lot.

Sunday GPP

DraftKings Lineup Configurations

Bortles is on fire right now and should be a very popular play this week, especially in a stack with Allen Robinson. I probably wouldn’t play them on a Sunday GPP because of the high expected ownership but on a Thursday slate I’ll give them a go because of the high amount of people that are going to play guys like Carson Palmer, Larry Fitz, etc. I want to go pretty high end at WR so I’m going to go super value at RB with Ryan Mathews and David Johnson. Both should be getting a decent number of touches and at their low prices they represent a potentially extreme value. Watkins and Baldwin both have great matchups and are playing excellent right now. I’ll add Alshon Jeffery as my FLEX with this great matchup this week as well. Greg Olsen is the top TE on the board but he should have a fairly low ownership because of his high cost. Seattle has the best matchup on the board for defense.

Do you want to win a GPP or do you want to merely cash a GPP? This is the “if I’m not first, I’m last” GPP lineup. You’re not getting a better matchup for a Manziel/Benjamin stack all year so if you’re going to go for it this is the time. To go along with the theme of going for it I’m adding in Draughn and Dorial Green-Beckham as cheap, high upside plays. I’ll temper my risk with some studs like Shady, OBJ, Antonio Brown, and Travis Kelce. The Eagles D will not put up 3 TD’s against this week but they are always a defense that’s playable in a GPP because of their special teams and ability to pressure the QB.

Eli Manning is a cash game play now? What has this world come to. Eli is a little more risky than the usual cash game play but a game against the Dolphins can turn anyone into a competent QB. Even Matt Schaub went for 300+ yards last week with no WR to speak of. I’ll pair OBJ and Eli and then go pretty safe with my other WR positions with Alshon and Doug Balwin, who is on complete fire the last few weeks. Doug Martin, Frank Gore, and Charcandrick West all split some RB time on their teams but they are pretty cheap and have top 7 matchups for their position. Julius Thomas has a solid matchup and is the safest TE play at his price point. Few defenses are consistently as good as Carolina.

Andy Dalton continues to put up great numbers each week but he’s still priced and owned like a QB2. I love getting that upside at a low ownership and a low price. The more the week goes on the more sold I am on good weeks from West and Mathews. I really think we’re going to see a nearly 20 touch game out of Mathews. At WR I wanted upside but once again was looking for low ownership. I’m using VJax and Hurns instead of Evans and ARob in the hopes that I can get all the matchup goodness without the high ownership. I’m also going to spend big on Julio Jones and hope that his low Thursday ownership rates continue into the weekend as people fear him going up against Josh Norman. Norman doesn’t cover the slot and Julio does a lot of work from there. If he pops off I’m going to be the only guy who has him and that’s huge. With all the uncertainty in my lineup I’m going to cover myself a little bit with Antonio Brown. He’s as sure a thing as there is in fantasy. With all the issues surrounding the New Orleans offense it would seem to make sense to see Ben Watson get even more looks. For his price it’s definitely worth a play. My defense is going to be the Lions and their fearsome D-line against Case Keenum and the Rams. This could be a game where we see a lot of heat on the QB leading to sacks and turnovers.

Thursday GPP

I’ll preface this again this week by saying that I dislike playing Thursday players. However, I’m including a lineup with one in there so you, dear reader, can get an idea of what is possible. First off, you can’t push Carson Palmer aside; Russell Wilson and the Seahawks exposed the Mineesota passing defense last week, so Carson is certainly in play. He has arguably been the best QB this season, along with Cam. That being said, I’m rolling with his RB here, the rookie David Johnson. He got a big workload last week and Bruce Arians has been quoted as saying that he wants to get his young back 25 touches. Arians is a straight shooter, so if he says that’s what he wants, that’s likely what he’ll get. Barring a big Minnesota lead early in the game, you’ll be seeing a lot of Johnson.

This roster, and the ones below it when they are posted, will be heavy on Seahawks and Bucs, starting with their QBs Wilson and Winston. I really want to think of a nickname for the pair, but the only thing that is coming to mind is Double Dubya, which sounds like 8 years that this country will never get back. Anywho…..Both have excellent matchups (the Ravens and Saints have been letting opposing QBs trample them). I’m pairing each of them with one of their receivers, in this case the red-hot Doug Baldwin and Vincent Jackson, whose upside in this game is very high. I have no problem rolling out any of the other skill position players for either team: Rawls, Martin, Evans…you name it.

Delanie Walker is still underpriced. Mariota is addicted to him, and the matchup against the Jets is not as scary as it looks on paper. Draughn gets an excellent matchup with the Browns’ run defense. Sammy Watkins gets a Philly team that is generous to opposing #1 WRs. Allen Hurns is over concussion protocol and gets a matchup against a Colts team he burned earlier this season. He is a bit riskier play now that Julius Thomas is consistently playing well, but Hurns’ upside is enticing. If you want to pivot away from him, DeSean Jackson is right around the same price. The KC DST at home gets a juicy matchup against the patchwork Chargers.

Sunday 50/50

Like my fellow collaborator Doug Shain wrote in this week’s Hail Mary, I’m in love with Blaine Gabbert this week. Well, OK…maybe I’m not quite as enamored with him as Doug is, but I love how he’s been playing (no fewer than 16 FP on Fantasy Aces in his 4 games). He should continue his production once again this week against the Browns. I’m also rolling with his RB Shaun Draughn, whose matchup is one of the juiciest of the week. I’m going RB heavy here, slotting in Thomas Rawls — who should get a lot of work as the Hawks build a big lead early — and LeSean McCoy — the workhorse back for the Bills who gets to go up against his former team. A.J. Green is my favorite WR play of the week, even taking into account the Antonio Browns and Odell Beckham Jr’s of the world….He destroyed the Steelers’ secondary earlier this season, which I expect to see again tomorrow. Brandon Marshall has been playing some of the most consistent football of his career. Delanie Walker is locked in as the #1 receiving option for Marcus Mariota, which will continue to be the case for the rest of the season, barring injury. To fit in some higher priced players, I had to slot in the uber cheap Will Tye, who has, over the past three weeks, become a favorite receiving option of Eli Manning’s. KC DST rounds out the lineup with a beaten down San Diego team limping into Arrowhead.

Sunday GPP

I won’t highlight the similar names here, but there are some noticeable differences to talk about. Tyrod Taylor, whom I forgot to talk about in the previous paragraph, slots in as one of my favorite QB plays this week against the Eagles. While the Eagles’ DST gets solid fantasy points, that is due to their big play ability; they still give up a ton of points. I’ve paired him with Sammy Watkins, as the Eagles are simply awful against opposing #1 WRs. Jameis Winston gets, perhaps, the best QB matchup of the week in the Saints, who have been absolutely pathetic this season. The surpassed the Ravens as QB streaming option numero uno a few weeks ago and haven’t looked back…They want that coveted worst fantasy defense title. His teammate Doug Martin slots in right next to him. While I don’t have Evans or VJax in this lineup, both are very worthy of a spot. Doug Baldwin gets a choice matchup against the aforementioned Ravens, who have nobody to stop the Hawks’ offense. The Lions are not my top choice (that goes to either Seattle or KC), but they have been playing well and get a bleeding St. Louis offense this week. Their upside is likely a bit lower on the road, but I like them nonetheless.

Sunday GPP 2

I like Osweiler against a Raiders team giving up yards galore to opposing QBs. I’ve paired him with DT, who should be in for a big game. Not as many people will be on Thomas, which could help separate your lineup in a GPP. I have Charcandrick West as a GPP play (and not also cash) because I simply have no idea how Andy Reid will be splitting carries this week. Ware has been playing well also, so it’s kind of a guess as to who gets the big points. I could actually see both having huge games. Tyler Eifert let me down earlier this season against the Steelers, but he should redeem himself this week. I feel pretty confident about him finding the end zone. Alshon Jeffery has had a few down weeks, fantasy wise. The Bears have a chance to get him the ball often this week against Washington. Look for Cutler to find his top wideout repeatedly this week. Martavis Bryant is, admittedly, the guy whose salary slotted in last. He doesn’t have the best matchup, but his speed and big play ability can take down any opposing secondary. I think Cincy will be focused more on stopping Brown, leaving Bryant with more room to operate.

A very simple, but good start to DFS research is to look at the over/unders and odds. Obviously you want your players in games where Vegas believes the game will be high scoring and on winning teams, while your defenses should come from games they believe will be low scoring.
