Dreaming of Streaming Week 11: Advice from Vegas
November 15, 2013 | C.D. Carter
That’s right: after spending the better part of two weeks pleading with you to sell your beloved Chiefs’ defense — the highest scoring in fantasy — I’m saying it’s far from the worst idea to roll with KC when they take on Peyton’s Perfect Machine Sunday night in Denver.
I’ve ranked them eighth, ahead of most Week 11 streaming options. It’s more than just banking on a spectacular defense; it’s what Kansas City does on the defensive side of the ball that makes them a viable option, even against the Broncos.
The Chiefs apply ceaseless pressure on the quarterback, ranking as Pro Football Focus’ third-best pass rush and averaging a league high 4.1 sacks per contest. The Colts’ defense last month created some sort of blueprint for how to at least slow Peyton’s Perfect Machine: pressuring Manning, getting in his face, knocking him down. I think Kansas City can replicate Indy’s blueprint, and do it better than the Colts.
Defensive Options for the Fantasy Playoffs
If you’re fretting about who you’re going to deploy in the fantasy playoffs, you’ve done well. It’s a good problem to have. It means you’ve secured — or almost secured — a playoff spot, which should be our singular goal from Week 1.
Here’s a quick look at the best defensive options for Weeks 14-16, according to the fabulous rotoViz Steaming D app. The app is updated every week, so buy a subscription if you want to keep up to date. These are all subject to change.
|Week 14||Week 15||Week 16|
|Chiefs (at WAS)||Seahawks (at NYG)||Lions (vs. NYG)|
|Oakland (at NYJ)||Chiefs (at OAK)||Browns (at NYJ)|
|Houston (at JAC)||Bengals (at PIT)||Cowboys (at WAS)|
|Dolphins (at PIT)||Panthers (vs. NYJ)||Titans (at JAC)|
|Chargers (vs. NYG)||Bills (at JAC)||Broncos (at HOU)|
Week 11 Over-Unders
|Falcons at Buccaneers||43.5|
|Jets at Bills||41|
|Lions at Steelers||47.5|
|Washington at Eagles||52.5|
|Chargers at Dolphins||45.5|
|Browns at Bengals||42|
|Ravens at Bears||46|
|Raiders at Texans||42|
|Cardinals at Jaguars||41.5|
|Chiefs at Broncos||49.5|
|Vikings at Seahawks||46|
|49ers at Saints||47.5|
|Packers at Giants||42|
|Patriots at Panthers||46|
- Vegas agrees with the consensus that that Bills and Jets should both be considered real-life streaming options this week. That measly 41 over-under is tantalizing, and Gang Green’s suddenly vicious pass rush against a so-so Buffalo offensive line should create a high fantasy floor for the Jets’ defense.
- Something I failed to mention in this week’s Dreaming of Streaming: The Giants’ defense, after a laughably awful start to 2013, has averaged 13.4 fantasy points over their past three contests. You’ll point out that they played Josh Freeman, Terrelle Pryor, and Matt Barkley during the stretch. That’s a valid point if you think Scott Tolzien — the thrower of two picks last week — is a life-altering upgrade from those signal callers. If you think Tolzien, who has been with the Packers for all of 15 minutes, is going to scorch Big Blue’s secondary, by all means, avoid the Giants this Sunday.
- The Saints-49ers over-under should give us some pause. It’s expected to be Week 11’s second highest scoring affair despite two defenses that have been suffocating through much of 2013. Neither team turns the ball over with any regularity, making it tough to spot the upside with either defense this week.
