Dreaming of Streaming: Week 14 December 7, 2015  |  Chet

The thirst is real in these fantasy football streets, so I’ll cut right to the chase and highlight some potentially season-altering defensive pickups for the fantasy playoffs — defenses that could save you as one of your studs inevitably tanks and ruins your psyche for the next 90 days.

Readers of this column are certainly on the savvy side of things. I wouldn’t be shocked if you’re already made some of these moves. But if you have bench space and a belief that matchups matter, like my calf tattoo says, then consider the following waiver moves this week.

Tampa Bay Bucs: They get the team formerly known as the Rams in Week 15 — the same Rams that have bled fantasy points to opposing defenses over the past month. The Bucs are on the road here, which isn’t a great point for process, but the matchup is still prime for the picking.

New York Jets: Gang Green has been dropped in a bunch of leagues over the past month, and rightfully so. They get the Cowboys in Week 15 though. The Jets are on the road, but against Matt Cassel and his league-worst completion rate on aimed throws, New York has quite a bit of upside for defensive streamers. They’re available in more than half of leagues.
Jacksonville Jaguars: the mercurial Jags defense gets a home tilt against a truly awful Atlanta team in Week 15. The Falcons have allowed 32 fantasy points to opposing defenses over the past three weeks. The Jaguars are at home and I wouldn’t be stunned if they’re the favorite here. I like the Jets and Bucs better than Jacksonville.

Now let’s get into Week 14’s streaming scores, with a reminder that streaming scores measure a defense’s matchup, not their ability to take advantage of that matchup. Bad defenses get scorched in good matchups all the time, which is why so many of our best streamers are found in the second tier of streaming scores.

Defense Opponent Week 14 Streaming Score
Lions Rams 5.5
Jets Titans 5
Colts Jaguars 4.5
Broncos Raiders 4.5
Cardinals Vikings 4.5

Detroit’s defense might be better than simply not terrible. They’ve recorded 14 sacks over the past three contests and largely shut down opposing passing attacks outside of Aaron Rodgers’ inexplicable Hail Mary on Thursday night. Even if you think the Lions still stink, they have a game against the Rams this week. There’s not much more we could ask for here. Defenses have notched double digit fantasy points in each of the Rams’ past four games. Not even Todd Gurley can survive the black hole that has become the St. Louis offense, which is downright offensive. Hold your nose, pick up Detroit, and profit.
The Jets are heavy home favorites against a Tennessee offense that has given up big fantasy totals to opposing defenses this season, with or without Marcus Mariota at the controls. Defenses are averaging 9.3 fantasy points when they get the Titans at home. We’re hoping Darrelle Revis is back for this one. Even if he isn’t, I see Gang Green as a strong streaming play with as high a floor as anyone in Week 14. The Jets are averaging 7.2 fantasy points in home tilts and rank second in quarterback hits this season. Quarterback pressures correlate well with turnovers.

Defense Week 13 streaming score Week 13 fantasy points Week 13 D/St rank
Cardinals 5.5 9 10th
Titans 5 6 16th
Washington 4.5 9 10th
Bears 4.5 5 17th
Jaguars 4.5 3 22nd

Through 13 weeks, out top-5 streaming scores are averaging 7.5 fantasy points per game.

Defense Opponent Week 14 Streaming Score
Bears Washington 4
Chiefs Chargers 4
Panthers Falcons 4
Browns 49ers 3.5
Seahawks Ravens 3.5
Packers Cowboys 3.5
Bucs Saints 3.5

The Cowboys’ ineptitude with Matt Cassel under center isn’t reflected in their streaming score because the team had been fairly stingy to opposing defenses with Tony Romo and Brandon Weeden at the helm. Ignore all that and run with Green Bay’s defense if you can. The Packers are sixth in the league in sacks this year. It would be fair to expect constant pressure on Cassel with a pretty bad game script (although that’s not a certainty with the Packers’ offense in shambles).
Kansas City is still a top-flight defensive option. If someone in your league dropped them in frustration last week, scoop them up and reap the benefits against a hollowed-out Chargers squad.

Defense Opponent Week 14 Streaming Score
Falcons Panthers 3
Titans Jets 3
Rams Lions 3
Bills Eagles 3
Ravens Seahawks 2.5
Washington Bears 2.5
Saints Bucs 2.5
Giants Dolphins 2.5
Dolphins Giants 2.5
Jaguars Colts 2.5

Jacksonville becomes an intriguing Week 13 play if the Colts have to turn to Clipboard Jesus with Matt Hasselbeck banged up after Sunday night’s massacre. Charlie Whitehurst doesn’t have a history of giving up handfuls of turnovers and sacks to opposing defenses. He threw just two interceptions on 217 pass attempts in 2014, though his accuracy on aimed throws (64.4 percent) was bottom of the barrel-type stuff. I see the Jags as a great floor play, rather than a blow-the-roof off play, if Clipboard Jesus gets the nod.
