Injury Report:

Antonio Brown and DeAngelo Williams are out. Markus Wheaton, Heath Miller and Martavis Bryant get bumps in this tough matchup. All are worthwhile in DFS, but Ben’s shoulder is no 100%.

Speaking of Roethlisberger, the news out of practice is that he looks good, making all his throws. I don’t think they want to give anything away, so they may be sugarcoating it, but it’s better news than if his arm had fallen off.

Jeremy Maclin’s ankle is still hurting and if he were to suit up, I wouldn’t use him in DFS. Give Conley and Wilson a run for cheap.

Rob Gronkowski has an ailing knee and back, but will play. He’s scary in cash games, but I think he makes for a nice GPP play.

Marshawn Lynch practiced all week, traveled to Carolina and declared himself ready. He’ll be the lead back once again.

Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola are listed as questionable, but both will play. Edelman will be the go-to receiver this week. Get him in your lineups.

Cash

Cash

Cam is my favorite cash QB this weekend. Even if he’s stopped through the air, he’ll do everything in his power to move the ball in this playoff game, so rushing yards would compensate. And of course he could put those together, which is why his upside is so high. David Johnson has the best matchup and will be on everyone’s team, but for good reason. White is a bit scarier for cash, but I know he’ll get some receptions and have space to work with. All the other RBs are either coming off injuries, or going against tough run defenses. White can side-step KCs tough run defense through the air. Floyd has been Palmer’s top target lately and I think that continues this week. If Brown suits up, pivot from Wheaton, but if he’s out, Wheaton should see plenty of work. Edelman is coming off his injury, but will be called on to lead this team, especially with Gronkowski banged up. Olsen is the safest play this week at tight end with Gronk hurting. McManus gets the high elevation to kick in. Patriots should be able to key on Kelce with Maclin hurting and KC will have trouble moving the ball.

GPP

GPP

I actually like this for a cahs game as well. Wilson has been too hot to slow down and his best receiver, Baldwin, will work out of the slot and avoid Josh Norman. I will probably fade Johnson in a GPP or two, but for the most part I’ll have trouble not having him in most lineups. Ware is going to lead this backfield again and is in line for a touchdown, as KC will need to run the ball without Maclin. Floyd is the highest upside WR in the highest over/under game of the weekend and Ted Ginn is the perfect GPP play, as his upside is insane, but his downside is also insane. Gostkowski may be busy in this game, as the Patriots aren’t at full strength, but with Edelman back, they should be able to move the ball. Peyton Manning has turned the ball over in every game he’s started.

New GPP

New GPP

I wanted to make sure I got Gronk in a GPP as his ownership might be low due to his injury, but he should play and that means upside. I’m fading David Johnson here and only as a very contrarian play in a few GPPs. I like Starks more than Lacy in this game, but it’s hard to tell how things will shake out with both on the verge of a benching if they were to fumble. I thought about going with West over Ware here, but Ware is cheaper and better. I think he gets plenty of work. The news that Ben was making the throws he needed to make in practice helps me get more on board with Bryant.

Playoff Cash

A cash game is very hard on a four game slate but this lineup has a pretty high floor, which is what you want in cash. Palmer has been one of the most consistent cash game QB’s this year (along with Cam Newton) and he’s very inexpensive on DK. Pairing him up with Fitz won’t cost you anything and as you can see it still gives you plenty of money to roster some other high end players. David Johnson is the best RB on the slate and I can’t fade him in cash. He can be very productive without a ton of work. I’m using my other RB spot, and my flex, to go with a couple of guys who should be catching some passes as well as running the ball. Todman, especially, should see a lot of work as the Steelers are most likely going to be playing catchup most of the game. Cobb, Sanders, and Gronk are top options for the offenses and will all be getting a ton of targets. I love targets for my pass catchers in cash. I’m not looking for upside at all here, I just want guys who are going to have that high floor. As usual in cash I’m going with the top defense to make sure that I don’t lose because I got cute on D. Denver against a totally depleted Pittsburgh team is by far the best play on the board.

Playoff GPP

Most people this week are going to be riding Palmer, Brady, and Manning and staying far away from Aaron Rodgers. I don’t like the matchup at all but if you want to win a GPP on a 4-game slate you have to take some chances. Few QB’s have the upside of ARod when he’s on his game. I’m going to pair him with Randall Cobb and hope the Packers continue to use him out of the backfield like they did last weekend. Those few extra rushing yards could make a big difference. RB is really hard to peg this week so I’m going with my anchor in David Johnson who is probably the best RB on the slate and then going with some upside with CJ Anderson. I’m also going to stack Steven Jackson with the Patriots D and hope NE is up big and grinding out the clock to end this game. If KC doesn’t have Maclin then that’s a very possible scenario. I don’t want to mess around too much at WR so I’ll go with Demaryius Thomas against a weak Steelers secondary and Doug Baldwin because he’s been too hot to sit right now. I think Baldwin will actually have a lower than expected ownership because of the impending return of Marshawn Lynch combined with the bad matchup against Carolina. Gronk and Kelce should be popular TE plays and I’m hoping people miss the boat on Greg Olsen because he’s playing a “name” defense in Seattle. When the played earlier this year Olsen had a big game and he’ll need to do the same for Carolina against this week.

NFL Divisional Round Playoffs GPP Weekend Update

From everything I’m seeing, hearing, and reading people are just off of Green Bay this weekend. That means I’m going to go with one of the best gunslingers in the NFL with the potential for a very low ownership rate. Pairing him up with “Mr. Do Everything” Cobb could lead to a huge week if ARI isn’t able to shut them down like they did late in the season. I’m going to rely on ARod being Arod. David Johnson is basically unfadeable this weekend because I don’t want to be left out in the cold if he goes off. RB is such a sketchy position this week that I have to make sure I don’t lose a GPP because I got cute there. My 2nd RB is Jordan Todman because PIT is going to have to throw and if it’s Big Ben in the lineup he’s proven all he can do is dump the ball off. If it’s Landry Jones then all he’s capable of is dumping the ball off. I’m looking for Todman to have a similar impact this weeks as Chris Thompson did last week for the Redskins. I’m going to use Demaryius Thomas at WR because I think DEN can throw on PIT this weekend and I’m expecting Sanders to be the more highly owned of the two big Broncos WR. I’ll take Thomas’ upside in a GPP. My thinking is the same with John Brown and Larry Fitzgerald. I’ll take Fitz (and Sanders, for that matter) in cash, but I want the big play upside of Brown in a GPP. I’m going to count on Doug Baldwin to continue is solid production in a plus matchup against Cortland Finnegan. I’m hoping his ownership is down due to the fear that he’s going to be locked down against Josh Norman. That won’t happen. Gronk and Olsen are going to see sky high ownership so I’ll take Kelce as KC is going to have to throw to keep up with New England. Speaking of the Pats I’ll take their defense to stifle Alex Smith. I don’t normally like to play my defense against one of my offensive players, but even if Kecle goes 8-110-1, NE can still put up a solid game for their low price.

Playoff Cash

There are a few players that I want no matter what this week in cash games. First and foremost is the guy everybody is going to have in their lineups: David Johnson. He has been excellent since taking over the starting RB role in Arizona and had a fantastic game against Green Bay in their matchup earlier this season. While he might kill your chances in a GPP if he falters, because of his expected extremely high ownership levels, he could have a dud and still not hurt your cash game lineups. Carson Palmer is also on my radar here, as is Michael Floyd. Palmer, in my opinion, is the safest QB option on the board this week. Floyd has been on fire for the last two thirds of the season (well, let’s just not mention that last Seattle game). Arizona has too many weapons for any of them to be double teamed. If one is, it’s likely to be Fitz and not Floyd or Brown. Alex Smith is my other QB here. Why? Well, he simply does not make mistakes. He’s not going to score 30, but he’s almost guaranteed to get you a floor of 14-16. How can you turn the ball over when all you do is dump the ball off to your TEs and RBs (Maclin may play, but will he really be a factor here?).

The two Denver wideouts are my favorite plays at the position this week. Pittsburgh, though OK against McCarron last week, will have no answer for the Denver passing game. Unless they can get to Peyton repeatedly (which certainly could happen – he’s only a GPP play for me this week), these two could have monster games like they did in the first matchup. Things are pointing in Denver’s direction this week, barring a miracle full recovery for Ben and AB. James Jones has been the real #1 WR in Green Bay since Mike McCarthy took over the play calling again; he has 51 targets in the past five games. Yeah.

Playoff GPP

I won’t rehash the similar plays here, and there are a few. The biggest change here is at QB, where I’ve gone with Rodgers and Peyton. Both have huge potential this week. Rodgers gets an Arizona defense that is without the Honey Badger. His absence wasn’t the only reason Seattle ran roughshod over them in Week 17, but it certainly didn’t help. I’ve stacked them both with their top two WRs here. Cobb is very reasonably priced. I payed up a bit for Lacy, too. He’s a bit risky, but has been running OK of late and was able to crack double digits against the Cardinals in the regular season matchup. I hate him in cash games, but he’s in contention here. Because I used him instead of James White, I had to go with the Chiefs at DST. Foxboro is a tough place in which to play, but this KC defense has been on a roll. I’m not betting against them (though I’m not using them in cash games either).

Playoff GPP Update

I’m stacking who I think are the top two QBs this week: Wilson and Newton. They are pricey, so I had to make a few tradeoffs, but the pricing is pretty forgiving this week. I was still able to fit in Davis Johnson, Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders and Olsen, all of whom are near must plays for me this week. The Broncos are, too, as I just don’t see Pitt hanging with them without AB. The only way I see Pitt making a game of this is if they can pick off Peyton multiple times, which could happen, though I have a feeling Peyton is going to come to play. Think of his arm as an uncooked noodle this week instead of a loosey, goosey spaghetti noodle that you are trying to throw against the wall to see if it sticks. Better yet, just ignore that ridiculous last sentence. I prefer James White on PPR sites, but he slots in here and offers the best upside of the cheaper RBs. The main concession was dropping Michael Floyd for Jared Abbrederis. Abbrederis takes over the third WR position for the Packers, a traditionally solid fantasy option. While I’m not excited about his prospects, I have to at least acknowledge that he has a chance at a decent game. Hell, his hands can’t be worse then Davante’s, can they? Don’t use him in cash games.

Odds

A very simple, but good start to DFS research is to look at the over/unders and odds. Obviously you want your players in games where Vegas believes the game will be high scoring and on winning teams, while your defenses should come from games they believe will be low scoring.
