Today, two writers from The Fake Football, Mike Braude and Asher Molk – who were thoroughly unimpressed with the payouts and settings of existing online fantasy football money leagues – announce the grand opening of Apex Fantasy Football Money Leagues, your online fantasy football solution with skill-based settings and high payouts. If you are a fantasy football fanatic (like all of us here at The Fake Football) and those 1-2 leagues you do at home with your friends simply doesn’t quench your thirst for fantasy football, then Apex is the site for you. At ApexFantasyLeagues.com, you can play fantasy football for money online against competitors all over the United States and Canada. Why should YOU use Apex instead of other sites? Glad you asked:

- Apex offers $125, $275, $550, and $1000 leagues with ridiculously high payouts. For example, if you win our “Veteran” league with a $275 buy-in, you get paid $1,880, with 2nd and 3rd place getting paid as well! Click here for more information on our payouts.

- Apex makes sure the BEST and MOST CONSISTENT fantasy owners win through their settings. No other online fantasy football money leagues combine all these elements:

-Two Game Weeks: How many times have you scored the 2nd or 3rd highest amount of points but still lost, while teams who performed worse “earned” a W? At Apex, that will no longer bury you in the standings. Every week, you play against a random opponent AND the league-average score – against the league-average the top six scoring teams win while the bottom six scoring teams receive a loss. This reduces reliance on the arbitrary “strength of schedule” aspect and makes sure the best teams are rewarded every week while maintaining the adrenaline rush of head-to-head action.

-Deep Starting Lineups and Rosters: Most online fantasy football money leagues (Yahoo, CBS, Masters) only make you start 8-9 total players. This is not optimal for good fantasy football players because it gives the bad owners a larger margin for error in drafting and free agency, for they do not need to field a deep and balanced team. But Apex makes you start 10 players and fill 8 bench spots. This ensures the fantasy football owner who does their research and makes many quality decisions is rewarded.

-“Blind Bidding” Free Agency: How many times has another team in your league gotten that MVP free agent just because they were lucky enough to have waiver priority that week? Apex believes the best- not luckiest- owners should win. At Apex, each team receives $500 in “free agent” money for each owner to use as they see fit. Thus, the smart owners who spend their money wisely are rewarded with the best free agents, not simply the person with waiver priority.

-Apex will give you Mike Braude’s expert 2013 fantasy football projections for FREE just for signing up for our email list! No waiting around for them either – you get them immediately after confirming your subscription.

-Apex is associated with the Fantasy Sports Trade Association, Authorize.net, and MyFantasyLeague.com to ensure legitimacy. We know how hard it is to ensure trust in your fantasy football provider so we’ve gone to great lengths to ensure our credibility.

Apex is made BY fantasy football fanatics FOR fantasy football fanatics, and we ensure the best, most consistent fantasy owners are the ones who get paid! What are you waiting for? SIGN UP TODAY!

Tune in below to see a 12-team mock draft from June 6th in which I draft from the #10 spot. I want to thank the good folks who took part in this mock with me in the video. It’s much more challenging and fun to draft in a league full of real gamers than one full of auto-drafters.

I’m hoping the pan-and-zoom innovations I’ve implemented since last season will make this disclaimer obsolete, but note that you may need to adjust the settings on the YouTube video player to “HD” to be able to read all the player names on the screen and whatnot. Enjoy!

Greetings from Fake Football Land. The weather is beginning to heat up (not here in Seattle but I picture other locations being sunny), and fantasy football news is beginning to surface as we begin the all-important summer months that will shape our draft boards and cheat sheets like a football shaped ball of clay. Plenty of news has surfaced regarding the running back position this week, the most interesting of which are noted below, so get to scrolling!

Ahmad Bradshaw: The Indianapolis Colts signed former New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw to a one year contract this week, which throws a significant wrench in the fantasy value of Vick Ballard. Ballard had a decent rookie campaign in 2012 with 814 yards rushing, but lacked big play ability as he chugged along to a mere 3.9 yards per carry (tied with Shonn Greene, ewwwww). I have bumped Bradshaw up into the late 20’s in my 2013 running back ranks, while Ballard drops to 40th behind other backup running backs with more upside. In case you’re curious, and I know you are, Donald Brown is now toast in the realm of fake football so tuck his name into the deep corner of your brain next to your locker combination. Bradshaw should have a decent season ahead of him if his troublesome feet hold up, as he will provide a far more versatile back for Andrew Luck to utilize on all downs.

Willis McGahee: Grandpa Willis was released by the Broncos, presumably to fix himself an Arnold Palmer and cozy up in a rocking chair on his front porch. This means that Denver’s backfield is in the hands of rookie Montee Ball. Although fellow running backs Ronnie Hillman and Knowshon Moreno are still in town, Ball should end up with the bulk of the carries in Denver and will feed off the passing prowess of Peyton Manning and his barrel full of playmaking receivers. Ball’s ADP will skyrocket from here on out and will be interesting to follow as fantasy drafts approach. I would be comfortable with Ball as a mid to low-end RB2 right now with plenty of room this summer for him to improve his fantasy stock.

Reggie Bush: As Carlos Monarrez from the Detroit Free Press reported, Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator Scott Linehan declared that Bush’s involvement in Detroit’s offense “is going to be pretty substantial.” Our main man C.D. Carter already highlighted Bush’s potential for serious fantasy point production in PPR leagues in 2013, but Bush may also find himself in the top 15 of standard leagues as well if he can stay on the field and reap the benefits of Matthew Stafford zinging what seems like 94 passes a game. I’ve got Bush at 20th in my current running back rankings, with room to rise.

Rashard Mendenhall: Word out of Arizona is that Mendenhall appears to be the number one back in Cardinal land. While this doesn’t technically qualify as news, as Mendy was brought in for this purpose, there are a ton of running backs on the Cardinals roster including Ryan Williams and rookies Stepfan Taylor and Andre Ellington, and this is the first hint of clarity that has leaked from the desert. If you are a dues paying member of the “Blame 2012 on the quarterbacks and Bruce Arians will save the world” club, then feel free to hop on board with Mendenhall in the middle rounds after you snag Larry Fitzgerald early. I would rather grab Williams or one of the rooks late, but we will see how the summer shakes out.

Understanding which fantasy football commodities did the most with their opportunities is one of the ways we gauge value and project sleepers, though some measurements of a player’s efficiency leave a lot to be desired.

That’s why I’d like to take a quick look at how many fantasy points tight ends scored for every pass route they ran in 2012. I’ve included tight ends available late in 2013 fantasy drafts since the elite guys will go early no matter what, and whoever is drafting them won’t lose sleep over their fantasy points per route run (FPPRR).

We can never account for the myriad of factors that play a role in making a pass catcher’s numbers look especially good or particularly bad. Probably FPPRR is one of the better measures for determining tight end efficiency, however.

I’ve often referred to fantasy points per snap (FPPS) in determining fantasy efficiency, though with tight ends – unlike wide receivers – that number may be skewed. Tight ends are asked to block, as you may know, so FPPS would seem to penalize tight ends who get a fair amount of snaps, but aren’t running a whole lot of pass routes. Not everyone, after all, is Jared Cook, who was hardly ever asked to block during his limited playing time in 2012.

Some of these tight ends missed a bunch of games in 2012, were asked to block more than most tight ends, benefited from garbage time glory (Myers) or fell victim to breathtakingly awful quarterback play.

I didn’t include fantasy degenerate favorite Rob Housler in the above table because his FPPRR – a horrid, hideous .11 – was certainly a product of the Cardinals’ historically bad quarterback play in 2012. I wouldn’t blame any fantasy owner for throwing out last year’s Arizona pass catcher production. It’s almost impossible to overstate just how much Cardinals’ receivers and tight ends suffered from the play of John Skelton and Ryan Lindley.

I mention Housler’s abysmal FPPRR because you’re missing out if you write off the second year tight end as a viable fantasy option, if only for streaming purposes.

Head coach Bruce Arians described the 6’5”, 250-pound Housler in a recent interview as a “wideout playing tight end” who will be a mismatch nightmare in a Cardinals’ offense that will chuck the ball all over the place in 2013.

After kicking off my QB Rankings last week, it is time to add the other backs to the mix, so here are my 2013 fantasy RB Rankings. I address these backs quite differently though, basically, it is an early and often approach.

In fact, I typically have 3 running backs before the beginning of round 6. I only diverted from this path once and it was a disaster. The worst fake football team I’ve ever had, yet somehow, I got that mess within 1 game of the playoffs.

You likely cannot have too many running backs on your bench either, so grab handcuffs, both for your own players and other team’s players.

Look for upside picks within running back committees and be ready to stash a few backups too. You never quite know when the 2013 Bryce Brown or Knowshon Moreno might get the chance to win you a weekly matchup or two.

There are all kinds of questions out there right now too, which when, or if ever, answered fully will greatly impact these rankings in the future.

Who wins the starting job in Green Bay, St. Louis and Arizona?

How many touches will Fred Jackson, Bernard Pierce and Ben Tate get?

How will the Giants, Panthers and Saints spread their carries around?

Can Darren McFadden and Ryan Mathews live up to their former hype and high-end potential?

Are Maurice Jones-Drew, Frank Gore and Chris Johnson able to get back to being first round talents?

Can rookies Giovani Bernard and Montee Ball take the number one role in Cincinnati and Denver?

Isn’t fake football fantastic? So how about we get to my 2013 Fantasy RB Rankings!

Whether the result of coaching changes or the arrival of high-profile players, a number of NFL passing offenses are presumed to be on the rise in 2013. Understandably, the number one wide receiver for those teams is experiencing a major bump in fantasy popularity, but don’t be too quick to overlook the secondary receiving options. If you’re buying into the hope of a major offensive upgrade, the top receiver likely won’t be the only one to benefit. And if you’re still on the fence about one of these up-and-coming offenses, a number two receiver is the perfect way to invest in a potential breakthrough without risking one of your top draft picks to do it.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

The Obvious Choice: Percy Harvin
Secondary Options: Sidney Rice; Golden Tate

Now that he has been freed from the shackles of Christian Ponder, Harvin’s fantasy stock is skyrocketing. He’s being drafted as a WR1 in most leagues, and I’ve seen some suggestions that he is a top-5 option at the position. The potential is certainly there, given the ability that Harvin has shown in the past and the leap that Russell Wilson made during the second half of 2012. But if Seattle’s passing game is going to be good enough to elevate Harvin to elite fantasy status, why can’t Sidney Rice be a viable WR3 for your team? Rice quietly had the second best season of his career a year ago, even though he didn’t dominate receiving targets for the Seahawks. I think Wilson will continue to spread the ball around a lot, leaving more than enough opportunities for both Harvin and Rice to be successful. Generous ball distribution and his nose for the endzone makes Tate an interesting option, as well, particularly if Seattle goes to the air more often in 2013. Tate is also intriguing considering the injury history of the two guys ahead of him on the depth chart.

ARIZONA CARDINALS

The Obvious Choice: Larry Fitzgerald
Secondary Options: Michael Floyd; Andre Roberts

Despite coming off the worst statistical season of his career, Fitzgerald is widely considered a top-10 fantasy receiving option for 2013. That’s what happens when you get out from under the Kolb-Skelton-Lindley-Hoyer disaster. And while Carson Palmer’s best days might be behind him, I’m sure Fitzgerald thinks he looks like Aaron Rodgers in comparison to last year’s quarterback mess. More important to me than the QB change, however, is the arrival of Bruce Arians, who orchestrated Andrew Luck’s outstanding rookie campaign and had a lot of successful years with Ben Roethlisberger before that. Not only does that bode well for Fitzgerald, but an Arians offense has always been kind to number two receivers, as well. In the last five years, the second option in Arians’ passing attack has averaged 942 yards and five touchdowns. That could mean big things for either Floyd or Roberts, and I’m betting on the former first-round pick out of Notre Dame. Despite his breakthrough a year ago, Roberts makes a lot more sense in the slot, whereas Floyd is a prototypical NFL receiver who finished 2012 on a high note, catching 14 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown against Chicago and San Francisco in the Cardinals’ final two games. With a year under his belt and operating in an improved offense, Floyd is someone to target in the middle rounds of your fantasy drafts this summer.

CHICAGO BEARS

The Obvious Choice: Brandon Marshall
Secondary Options: Alshon Jeffery; Earl Bennett

The degree to which the Bears’ passing game leaned on Marshall last season is staggering. He accounted for 41% of the team’s receptions, 40% of the targets, 46% of the yardage, and 52% of the touchdowns. But Marshall’s stellar season belies the fact that Chicago’s passing offense was one of the worst in the league. Enter new head coach Marc Trestman and his hybrid West Coast Offense that relies heavily on a short passing game and a high volume of throws. This should keep Jay Cutler more upright than he has been used to in recent years, and could translate to a dynamic offense in 2013. Marshall is certainly the primary beneficiary and is appropriately being drafted as a top-5 fantasy receiver in most leagues. But keep an eye on Jeffery. In an injury-riddled rookie season, he managed to show flashes of the potential that made him the 45th overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. With Marshall garnering most of the attention from opposing defenses and in an offense that should be looking to spread the ball around more, Jeffery could be poised for a breakout year. Bennett has also had trouble staying on the field the last two seasons, but if injuries resurface for Jeffery, you could once again be hearing a lot about Cutler’s former Vanderbilt teammate, making him worth a late-round flyer.

You signed up for a fantasy football draft. This was supposed to be all about drinking beer and enjoying a night with the boys. The problem is you’ve been on the clock so long that your beer’s gone warm, and your buddies can’t stand the sight of you. You’ve been faced with the seemingly insurmountable task of deciding who to pick from a group of players ranked in the same tier, and you’re paralyzed with mental anguish. We get it…and we’re here to help. This week, we’ve given our writers two groups of players who fall right next to each other in positional rank and ADP. Here are the picks they would make and the logic behind them:

Late Round TE: Brandon Myers, Jared Cook, Martellus Bennett, Tyler Eifert

Adam Cook (@fantasy_schnerd)

Jared Cook by far has the most upside, but give me Brandon Myers. Eli Manning loves his TE’s and Myers proved last year that he can rack up big yardage. His touchdown potential increases moving from Oakland to New York. Ideally I would like to draft two of these guys and match-up play them. Myers also gets a boost in PPR settings. Cook and Bennett are not far behind Myers and should definitely be drafted in standard sized leagues. I’m not a big fan of Eifert this year as he will split production with Jermaine Gresham.

Kevin Roberts (@nflsoupkevin)

It’s Jared Cook all day. The other guys all have potential, but it’s arguable they’ve already hit their ceilings, while the sky is still the limit for Cook. It’s worth noting that the Rams haven’t had a legit tight end for fantasy purposes in forever, but perhaps Cook’s athleticism, size, and speed will end that drought. He and Sam Bradford are reportedly already clicking, so I’ll aim high with Cook as my late round tight end.

@Phil TWR

From Bears TE Coach Andy Bischoff: “The days of the tight end that blocked and ran flat routes in this league are coming to an end. The guys that just run 3-yard flat routes, that’s not going to do anything for you.” Sounds to me like the Bears brought in Bennett to be a receiving threat in Marc Trestman’s pass happy offense. The fact that @MartysaurusRex is a thoroughly entertaining twitter feed is just gravy. Give me Bennett here.

Jason Willan (@ConsultFantasy)

I’m intrigued by Jared Cook’s athleticism in St. Louis, particularly since Sam Bradford doesn’t have a clear-cut number one option in what should be an improved passing game, but give me Martellus Bennett here. He always had a lot of unrealized potential in Dallas and finally seemed to put things together with the Giants last year. Marc Trestman’s offense in Chicago is going to include a lot of quick slants, outs, and seam routes, which could highlight Bennett often, and particularly in the red zone. The Black Unicorn could be the number two receiving option on a team poised to breakout offensively.

John Kerwin (@Jkerwin777K)

Tyler Eifert is the player of the future in this group, but I’d take Jared Cook right now without a doubt. The Titans will someday regret not utilizing the superior athleticism and talent that Cook possesses. Used way too often as a blocker in TEN, I look for the Rams to help Cook flourish as a receiving TE. The additions of Austin, Bailey, and wishful emergence of Quick will really help open things up for the freakishly athletic TE. Look for Bradford to lean on Cook often and as a primary red zone threat within such a young offense. I expect Cook to consistently display his talent and finally become the relevant starter we’ve been awaiting.

Greg Smith (@gregsauce)

I see a unicorn, I want it painted black. No colors anymore, I want them to turn black. I see Jared Cook walk by dressed in his blue and gold. I have to turn my head until Martellus goes.

Asher Molk (@AsherMolk)

Martellus Bennett is a no-brainer for me. He’s in a pass-happy offense, has a clear path to targets (unlike Eifert), and finally produced semi-consistently last year (unlike Cook). As opposed to Myers, Bennett is actually somewhat dynamic, and possesses the most upside. After the Big Five TE’s go off the board, Bennett has as good of a case as anyone to be number six.

Mid Round RB: Giovanni Bernard, Mark Ingram, Jonathan Stewart, Shane Vereen

Adam Cook (@fantasy_schnerd)

This pick would be a lot easier come August, but for now give me Jonathan Stewart in standard leagues. Stewart is the only running back out of this group who could see 15 plus touches regularly. In PPR leagues I would draft Bernard and Vereen over him though. I do not see Vereen and Bernard scoring many touchdowns due to the presence of Green-Ellis and Ridley, limiting their overall value. I have been burned by Ingram before, so I am personally afraid to touch him at his current ADP. It looks as if Pierre Thomas will still be somewhat involved in the Saints game plan.

Kevin Roberts (@nflsoupkevin)

When talking about committee backs, you either need to roll with the guy who will score a ton, or is so explosive you’ve just got to draft him. Considering Bernard is a rook, and Ingram and Stewart both struggle to stay healthy, I’ll opt with Vereen and his explosiveness. Vereen is locked into Danny Woodhead’s old third down role, and he’s good enough to eventually steal some early down work too. I love his upside as a Flex and he could wiggle his way to regular RB2 value if all goes well.

Jason Willan (@ConsultFantasy)

When it comes to picking from players that are part of a potential running back committee, I’ll take the guy that I think can distance himself from the other options. Ingram hasn’t done much with limited opportunities in New Orleans and continues to be part of a very crowded backfield. Stewart will once again have to contend with DeAngelo Williams, Mike Tolbert, and Cam Newton in Carolina. Vereen, while very capable, is firmly behind Stevan Ridley in the New England pecking order, fending off newcomers Leon Washington and LeGarrette Blount, and contending with the Patriots’ fickle distribution of carries. This leads me to Giovanni Bernard. BenJarvus Green-Ellis quietly had a 1,000-yard rushing season a year ago, but the Bengals’ offense needs more than the Law Firm’s 3.9 yards per carry average. Enter Bernard, whom Cincinnati drafted with the fifth pick of the second round in April. Regarded by some pundits as the most complete back in the 2013 draft class, Bernard should contribute immediately in the passing game and as a returner. And if Green-Ellis continues to plod along at a sub-4.0 yard per carry mark in 2013, I think Bernard can quickly work his way to a more prominent role in the Bengals’ backfield.

@Phil TWR

Picking the right guy out of this group may just win you your league. Unfortunately, it may not be clear who the right guy is until the middle of the season. These are all lottery tickets, so you might as well grab the one with the biggest jackpot. For my money, I’ve got to agree with Jason - it’s Gio Bernard. The Bengals playoff loss to the Texans made it painfully clear that BJGE, and his 3 yards and a cloud of dust routine wasn’t going to cut it. Bernard is probably the only guy on this list with a chance of earning starter’s carries without an injury in front of him on the depth chart. Running behind a solid o-line (ranked 11th by Football Outsiders), and handling all the pass catching duties, I can see Bernard returning RB2 value before it’s all said and done.

John Kerwin (@Jkerwin777K)

I am not interested in a Saints RB unless its PPR and the name reads Sproles. Shane Vereen will see an uptick in action, but a backfield of Belitricks and Ridley in front of him isn’t very enticing. Johnathan Stewart will forever live within the shadows of my fantasy hatred. That leaves the top selected rookie RB in this years draft, Giovanni Bernard. While I think he will initially share the workload with BJGE, I believe Gio is the superior talent and will garner the receiving duties out of the backfield. It won’t surprise me at all to see Gio slide right into a three-down role and take over the starting duties from BJGE much sooner than later. Gio cold flash consistent value in PPR leagues, and be a solid flex/Low-end WR2 at worst with opportunity.

Greg Smith (@gregsauce)

I am loath to endorse a New England running back, but I’ll take Vereen and risk being Belichecked into the proverbial boards. Ingram is a perennial stay-away for me (too many mouths to feed in New Orleans), Bernard is in line for the dreaded change-of-pace role in Cincinnati, and Stewart (along with all other Carolina RBs) lost his fantasy value when Cam Newton came to town. That leaves Vereen, who is also slated to be a change-of-pace back, but one who has already earned the trust of his quarterback and coach. With the departure of Wes Welker and the injury to Rob Gronkowski, Vereen offers the best opportunity to get involved in his offense and deliver some late-round value to your fantasy squad.

Welcome to The Fake Football’s dynasty rankings for the quarterback position. You can also check out the running back, wide receiver, and tight end positions if you’re feeling crazy or you’re trying to prevent yourself from dozing off at work (I won’t tell).

The quarterback position is not only deep, but deep with young, talented quarterbacks. In a start-up draft, I would be leaning toward the second half of the top ten, but there are some older options after those players that are still mildly appealing and can provide some value for the next few years. In my opinion, the top eight appear to be fairly interchangeable as I would be happy to go to battle with any one of them leading my dynasty team each weekend. The Peyton Manning/Romo/Large Ben area is where things get interesting. I would make sure I had a solid quarterback farm system stocked with some younger upside players if I went that route.

Welcome to The Fake Football’s 2013 Dynasty Rankings, where we dive in to the wild world of running backs. Feel free to click to find quarterback, wide receiver, and tight end ranks.

Running back is a bit more fickle than other positions in the dynasty world due to the age limitations on productive backs. Even with that factor, there are plenty of great top-level options to build around. Another differentiating feature for the RB position is the uncertainty surrounding multiple NFL backfields. There will be players skyrocketing up this list once training camps begin, so be sure to stay up on the latest NFL news here at The Fake Football and use those late round start-up dynasty picks on young, upside backs. We will spend more time analyzing the rankings below over the next few weeks.

Feel free to discuss/debate any rankings in the comments section below, and make sure to check out our updates as more NFL news is released this summer.

Welcome to The Fake Football’s 2013 Dynasty Rankings. Feel free to scope out our rankings for the quarterback, running back, and tight end positions as well.

Wide receiver is stacked in the dynasty world and there is no shortage of early round options to build a team around. After big dogs Calvin Johnson and A.J. Green are gone, other top flight players like Dez Bryant, Julio Jones, and Demaryius Thomas are all stellar #1 wide receivers to serve as franchise cornerstones. Two separate “age” debates will occur in dynasty start-up drafts this year, in the Roddy White/Andre Johnson and Reggie Wayne/Steve Smith tiers. The first two (of which I definitely prefer Roddy) are a bit younger and have more strong seasons in store, but the second two are creeping ever closer to retirement and will only provide production to dynasty teams for so long. The debate of age/talent vs. youth/potential is what makes dynasty decisions so exciting and these leagues so much fun to play in. The list below contains tons of youthful upside receivers as well, many of which will drive their way into the top 20 of next season’s rankings.
